Statement from Clean Water Action, California On Milo Yiannopoulous' Appearance At UC Berkeley

Monday, January 30, 2017

Controversial speaker Milo Yiannopoulous has been invited to speak at UC Berkeley on Wednesday night, February 1. This statement is in response.

Clean Water Action does not support the dissemination of misinformation and hate speech. We are extremely concerned about the message that Milo Yiannopoulos, a writer for the “alt-right” Breitbart news, will bring to our East Bay community. Currently Yiannopoulos is touring universities to promote hate speech and leverage white supremacy ideologies. On February 1st, he is coming to speak at our very own UC Berkeley. Many are in opposition to the message he spreads and some universities have even decided shut down his event.

Yiannopoulous is a proud climate change denier. He denounced the Standing Rock Water Protectors for shutting down his visit to North Dakota University; his Facebook page read “anyone know where I can buy a water cannon?” Yiannopoulous is a bully. In his previous visits to college campuses, Yiannopoulous has singled out transgender students in the audience. His derogatory comments create an unsafe space for people of color, the queer community and women.

His message directly threatens the lives and safety of UC Berkeley students and our greater Bay Area community. We, as an environmental organization believe in the truth and we believe in the right to know. We will not stand by silently while a racist and violent agenda is promoted.
