Water IS Life - Clean Water Action Stands with the Standing Rock Sioux - No DAPL

Monday, November 7, 2016

Clean Water Action supports the Standing Rock Sioux tribe as its members fight to protect treaty rights and their lands and water from damage from the proposed Dakota Access pipeline. We are disturbed to see way that officials have treated these peaceful "water protectors" as they defend their community and the drinking water sources for 17 million Americans downstream, on the Missouri River.

We support the rights of the tribe as a sovereign nation. The re-location of the pipeline to protect Bismarck’s drinking water supply, while putting the drinking water supply of the Standing Rock Sioux at risk is wrong and unjust. The impact on tribal lands, particularly a tribal burial ground, is also an injustice that must be addressed.

Pipelines fail. We have seen the damage from pipeline spills and breaks across the nation, and have opposed the spread of more pipelines through critical areas. The impacts of the Enbridge pipeline disaster in Michigan in 2010 are still being felt today and we know that spills, leaks and pollution happen every day, wherever oil and gas is produced, transported stored or consumed. Despite assurances, the Dakota Access pipeline has all the hallmarks of an ill-advised project. The Standing Rock Sioux are right to be concerned about the impacts on their water and lands.

We demand the federal government stop construction of the pipeline immediately, until further environmental reviews and consultations with the tribe are completed.  We urge Energy Transfer Partners to halt all construction and North Dakota officials to respect the rights of the tribe and others to protest this dangerous project.
