238 Members of Congress Vote To Put Corporate Polluters Before Health and Clean Water

Friday, May 18, 2018

Washington, D.C. -- Today 238 members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to repeal protections for streams, wetlands, and the drinking water sources for more than 1 in 3 people. In a nearly party-line vote, the House approved an amendment to the 2018 Farm Bill to repeal the 2015 Clean Water Rule. Though the full Farm bill ultimately failed to pass, these Representatives are again on record supporting an agenda that will puts drinking water in jeopardy.

Just three Republicans voted against the amendment: Costello-PA, Fitzpatrick-PA and Smith-NJ. Ten Democrats voted in support of the amendment:  Bustos - IL, Bishop-GA. Cooper-TN, Costa-CA, Cuellar-TX, Gonzalez-TX, Lamb-PA, O’Halleran-AZ, Peterson-MN, Schrader-OR, Scott-GA, Veasey-TX, Vela-TX. Sixteen Members did not vote or were absent.

Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released the following response:

"This should have been simple: Protect drinking water by rejecting the dirty water rider. But for 238 Representatives, it wasn't. They swung and missed, putting the needs of special interests, agribusiness, and corporate polluters before our water, communities, and public health.

The dirty water rider is a gift to polluters at the public’s expense. Though the House Farm Bill mercifully failed to pass,  House leaders have made it clear that they will try to attach dirty water riders anywhere they can, including spending bills and other must-pass pieces of legislation.

Voters now know who is looking out for their interests and who is beholden to corporate donors. 238 elected officials just went on the record in support of gutting safeguards that protect and drinking water sources across the country."
