Clean Water Action: Scott Pruitt’s nomination for Environmental Protection Agency Administrator is Reckless

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Washington, D.C. - Today, President-elect Trump nominated Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt as Environmental Protection Agency Administrator. Pruitt has a long history of questioning the science of climate change and opposing safeguards for water, air, and public health.

Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released this statement:

"Nominating Scott Pruitt, a professional climate denier who does the bidding of the oil and gas industry, is reckless. He has spent a career parroting industry talking points and actively working to undermine commonsense protections for our air, water, and climate. Ignoring climate science should automatically disqualify him from being able to lead EPA. He has a long history of suing EPA, in attempts to stop the agency from protecting the health and well being of Americans. EPA plays a vital role in protecting people and the environment, and to put someone in charge who does not agree with that mission is unacceptable.

“Pruitt has led the charge to throw out the Clean Water Rule, a vital safeguard for our nation’s waterways. As the Oklahoma Attorney General, Pruitt was one of the first to sue the Obama administration to block EPA from protecting the drinking water sources of 117 million Americans. The EPA Administrator must be someone ready to protect people’s health and natural resources, not the fossil fuel industry and powerful polluters.”

Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. We will protect clean water in the face of attacks from a polluter friendly Administration and Congress.
