Clean Water Action Statement the GOP Tax Bill in the Senate

Monday, December 4, 2017

Washington, D.C. - Late last week the Senate barely passed the GOP tax reform plan. Like other attempts at major legislation this year, this bill was rushed to the Senate floor with very little time for debate and deliberation. It was full of giveaways and deals to attract support, including a provision to open the Arctic Refuge to oil and gas drilling that imperils one of the last pristine wilderness areas in the US. Despite these handouts, Senate leadership was only able to muster 51 votes, a one vote margin, to pass the most sweeping reform of our nation's tax system in more than 30 years.

Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released the following statement:

"This bill is a lump of coal for everyone except for the most well-off and most well connected.  Senate leaders have mortgaged our future on a tax scam that will line the pockets of billionaires and corporations while leaving low and middle income Americans,  and our climate, footing the bill. It's appalling. Not only does the bill rely on failed economic theory, it's so full of giveaways to special interests that it should come with its own wrapping paper. The oil and gas industry gets a gift that we can't afford ─ drilling in the Arctic Refuge--and provisions that will curtail clean energy investment and end the tax credit on electric vehicles will hamper our ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This is the capstone on a year that proved Republican leadership will do whatever they can to please their corporate donors at the expense of the public. Fortunately we also learned this year that Americans won't let our leaders cynically sell us out without a fight. People are motivated and we will continue mobilizing our members across the country to hold their elected officials accountable for putting special interests before our health and our communities."

Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. We will protect clean water in the face of attacks from a polluter friendly Administration and Congress.
