Clean Water Action Statement on the Nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court

Washington, DC - President Trump has nominated Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Clean Water Action opposes this nomination and urges the Senate to reject him for the Supreme Court.

Clean Water Action CEO and President Bob Wendelgass released the following statement.

"We've seen Supreme Court decisions that have completely altered how our bedrock environmental laws, like the Clean Water Act, are implemented and enforced. That's why we need a Justice who won't be a rubber stamp for corporate interests and polluting industries. Judge Gorsuch is not that justice - he is the wrong choice for the Supreme Court."

"His record as a federal judge shows a hostility to environmental safeguards. He is opposed to the Chevron doctrine, which holds that experts from agencies like EPA must have the authority to interpret statute while carrying out regulations. Without Chevron, federal judges would be able to second guess experts, which is exactly what corporate polluters want. Rejection of the Chevron doctrine would undercut vital actions like the Clean Power Plan."

"On a host of other issues  - from women's rights and workers' rights to protections for Americans with disabilities - Judge Gorsuch is the wrong choice. The Senate has a responsibility to put the interests of public health, the environment and protection of civil rights before their corporate donors. The Senate must reject this nomination. “

Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. We will protect clean water in the face of attacks from a polluter friendly Administration and Congress.
