Hearing proves that Scott Pruitt doesn’t belong at EPA

Wednesday, January 18, 2017

Washington - Today the US Senate Environmental and Public Works Committee held a confirmation hearing for Scott Pruitt, Donald Trump's nominee for Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released this statement.

"Today's hearing confirmed what we already knew - Scott Pruitt is the last person who should lead EPA. He ducked questions about whether he believes climate change is real and happening now and caused by humans. He then strangely claimed that his personal beliefs on climate change are immaterial to leading an agency tasked with addressing that very issue. He sidestepped questions about his massive conflicts of interests and could point to no concrete examples of environmental protection that occurred on his watch. And he couldn't give a clear answer about how he can lead an agency that he has spent a career suing and de-legitimizing.

After today's hearing, and everything else we have learned, it would be absolutely irresponsible for the Senate to approve Scott Pruitt's nomination.

Scott Pruitt's pay-for-play politics are a direct threat to our water, air and climate. The Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency must be guided  by science - not campaign contributions from big polluters. Unfortunately Scott Pruitt has shown time and time again that he works for the fossil fuel  and agriculture industries, not the American people.

Scott Pruitt cannot lead EPA. The Senate must reject his nomination."
