The President must drop his demand for border wall funding and end the shutdown now

Tonight the Federal government entered a partial shutdown when Congress failed to reach an agreement on a continuing resolution to fund the government through February. Conservatives in the House, led by the "freedom caucus" and supported by President Trump, refused to help pass the bi-partisan agreement reached by the Senate earlier this week.

Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released the following statement:

"The President doesn’t understand that no one is buying his dangerous, divisive agenda. Instead of recognizing that the public rejected his fear-mongering while giving Congress a mandate to implement robust protections for our water, health, and communities, the President threw a tantrum and shut down our government. He is clinging to his shrinking political base by demanding money for his pet project -- the ridiculous, unnecessary, and ecologically destructive border wall. He is putting our lands and water at risk by giving the radical “freedom caucus” the cover to reject a commonsense deal to fund our government through February. He’s furloughing dedicated civil servants during the holidays for a political stunt. It’s time for the President and his allies to face facts, respect our American values, and work together to make sure the shutdown ends as soon as possible and the agencies tasked with protecting our water and communities are funded."

Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. We will protect clean water in the face of attacks from a polluter friendly Administration and Congress.
