President Trump's Climate Action Rollback is Reckless
Washington, D.C. - Today President Trump signed an executive order which aims to undo major initiatives to fight climate change including the Clean Power Plan, a ban on coal leasing on federal lands, and a requirement to consider the social cost of carbon in federal agencies decisions. The executive order also rescinded an Obama administration directive for the federal government to cut methane emissions by 40%, and directs the Department of Interior to undo basic transparency rules for fracking on public lands. Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released the following statement.
“It's clear who is calling shots in the Oval Office - dirty fossil fuel companies who only care about one thing - making massive profit, no matter the cost. As if the huge cuts to EPA in the President's budget weren't enough - the President is ignoring reality and putting public health at risk to serve the interests of the corporate polluters he has put in charge of our government with this executive order."
"The Clean Power Plan is the cornerstone in our fight to protect public health and curb climate change - walking away from it now is the height of irresponsibility. It will create havoc for the states and private companies that are already planning to reduce their emissions, and it will slow job growth in the clean energy sector. The other provisions of the order - lifting the ban on coal leasing on public lands, ignoring the social cost of carbon, and undoing the mandate for the federal government to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions - are absurd and reckless as well. The order also attempts to throw out rules for hydraulic fracturing on public lands, ignoring EPA’s own research that found that fracking threatens drinking water. These actions would set us back years and willingly hand over leadership toward the clean energy, clean water future to the other nations who are willing to stand up."
"President Trump and Scott Pruitt are like Thelma and Louise - holding hands as they drive us off the cliff. The President is putting our future at risk with this dangerous executive order."
