A Stunning Disconnect From Reality

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Washington ─ Tonight, President Trump gave his first State of the Union address. As expected he highlighted what his Administration did throughout his first year in office. He also previewed the infrastructure proposal that is expected to be released within the next few weeks.

Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released the following response:

"The President is proud of his dangerous agenda and dirty water administration. He shouldn't be. The wreckage of his first year in office is stunning ─ drinking water is at risk, coal plants again have a free pass to pollute our water, the federal government is retreating on climate action, the fossil fuel industry is getting whatever it wants, and communities are left to fend for themselves.

And the reckless agenda will continue. President Trump seems eager to double down on the corporate bonanza of his first year with the forthcoming infrastructure proposal. The portions of the plan that have been reported show a President who is disconnected from reality and the needs of the nation. The Administration’s so-called infrastructure plan is just another handout to polluters like fossil fuel companies and pipeline financers. It would eviscerate environmental and health protections, dismantling the Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and other bedrock laws.

The President made it clear tonight that his presidency will not change, that it is nothing more than scam to hand over our water, air and public lands to corporations, while selling out the American people."

Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. We will protect clean water in the face of attacks from a polluter friendly Administration and Congress.
