Clean Water Action is a national, grassroots environmental organization that seeks to protect the environment and safeguard public health, promote passage of strong environmental laws, and help communities address local environmental problems affecting them. Clean Water Fund provides research, education, organizing, and technical assistance to strengthen grassroots environmental efforts around the country, promoting the public interest on issues related to water, natural resources, health, and a healthy economy. Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund work together on selected campaigns and programs.
This is an exciting 32-hour-per-week hybrid position, primarily remote with occasional in-person meetings a few times a year for staff gatherings or fundraising events. The role supports work across Massachusetts (40%), Connecticut (20%), and Rhode Island (20%), offering the opportunity to collaborate with passionate environmental and justice leaders across New England. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Budget & Finance Support
• Assist in preparing, monitoring, and reconciling the three New England States (MA, RI, CT) program budgets.
• Track expenditures and revenues to ensure compliance with grant and organizational requirements.
• Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to state and national leadership and funders.
• Maintain accurate, organized records to ensure audit readiness and financial accountability.
Program & Grant Support
• Provide administrative and financial support for grant proposals, reports, and allocations.
• Manage the monthly grant allocations process and coordinate submissions with the finance team.
• Process purchase authorizations, check requests, and deposits in a timely manner.
• Track unrestricted funds and prepare a monthly unrestricted fund report for leadership.
• Collaborate with program staff to ensure timely and accurate financial documentation.
Administrative Coordination
• Provide general administrative support to state directors and staff.
• Schedule and coordinate meetings, prepare materials, and manage logistics for finance and program activities.
• Maintain program databases, digital records, and filing systems.
• Serve as a liaison between state program teams and national finance and operations staff.
Additional Responsibilities
• Contribute to organizational process improvements and cross-state coordination.
• Perform additional administrative or finance-related tasks as assigned.
• 2–3 years of experience in nonprofit administration, budgeting, or finance coordination (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
• Familiarity with nonprofit fund accounting and grant compliance preferred.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, with close attention to detail.
• Proficient in typing and data entry with accuracy and efficiency.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel); experience with accounting or CRM software is helpful but not required.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines while working independently and as part of a team.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to colleagues with varying levels of financial knowledge.
