Our celebration continues! February marks Black History Month in America, a time to reflect on important advancements and milestones in history and honor those who sacrificed and impacted the Black movement for justice and equality. And while we must look back to see the tremendous progress we have made; it is also important to uplift and celebrate Black leaders of today – Clean Water leaders.
Today's Black History champion is Kevin Jeffery, a lifelong water advocate turned urban planner, landscape and architectural designer. His focus is on waterscape design, as well as sustainable green infrastructure. Kevin recently moved with his wife from Juneau, Alaska to Southern California where he now works for the City of Chula Vista as a Landscape Planner.
In 2019, Kevin received a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin. Specializing in innovative urban water design technologies, he utilizes the healing powers of the natural environment in his work which gained him the Landscape Architecture Foundation’s Olmsted Scholar distinction and the inaugural Emerging Leader award from River Network.
For Kevin, creating stronger bonds between communities and their natural resources has always been a passion both personally and professionally. Although relatively new to Southern California, Kevin brings the knowledge and experience from working on sustainability initiatives in three capital regions, District of Columbia, Austin, Texas, and Juneau, Alaska. He has worked for responsible development in the private, nonprofit and government sectors. In addition, he has created and administered his own large-scale project in a water research study called “Blue Index,” a project to expand public participation in the protection and management of urban waterways. This project aims to improve a municipality’s narrative criteria by demonstrating the connection between the health of our waterways and our own well-being.
Kevin was nominated for his dedication and commitment to our water and our environment.
