Fireworks, parades, and picnics—what’s not to love about the 4th of July? But all too often, our celebrations leave behind a trail of plastic, food waste, and pollution that eventually ends up contaminating our water.
This Independence Day, let’s declare our freedom from wasteful traditions and commit to a cleaner, greener holiday. Here are a few simple ways to celebrate sustainably:
Ditch the Disposables
Swap single-use plastics for reusable plates, cups, and utensils. Hosting a picnic or BBQ? Encourage guests to bring their own reusables or provide compostable options.
Skip the Bottled Water
Plastic bottles are one of the most common items of litter in our lakes and rivers. Set out cups and a water cooler or pitcher instead—bonus points for adding lemon, cucumber, or mint!
Plan Meals to Reduce Food Waste
Make a shopping list and portion food appropriately. Freeze leftovers or send guests home with extra goodies (don’t forget to remind them to bring to-go containers!). Compost your food scraps to keep them out of landfills and reduce methane emissions.
Celebrate Without Microplastic Confetti
Avoid decorations that shed glitter or plastic—these tiny pollutants wash into storm drains and end up in our waterways. Opt for paper-based or natural décor instead.
Pack It In, Pack It Out
If you're headed to a park, beach, or lake, bring bags for trash and recycling. Make sure nothing gets left behind to harm wildlife or wash into storm drains.
Rethink Fireworks
Traditional fireworks contain metals and other substances that can pollute air and water. Attend a local community show instead of setting off your own—or explore fun, safer alternatives like glow sticks or biodegradable confetti poppers.
By making a few thoughtful choices, we can honor our nation’s independence and protect the natural resources that make our country so special.
From all of us at Clean Water Action—have a safe, sustainable, and joy-filled 4th of July!
