Berkeley, California has a rich history of many things, not the least of which is music and culture. When the ReThink Disposable California team (along with our partners at StopWaste) approached the historic Freight & Salvage to discuss moving away from single-use disposables, we knew we were going to ask them to make a new kind of history. The Freight is a world-famous venue featuring traditional music rooted in and expressive of the great variety of regional, ethnic, and social cultures of peoples throughout the world, and we felt that their food service should reflect their commitment to community.
Together, we tackled their use of plastic cups, food boats, and utensils. The Freight features local wines and craft beers that are made with love; they should be served in sustainable stemware. The food is prepared fresh and is much more appealing in a stainless-steel food boat. And your dining experience is elevated when you're given stainless-steel utensils. What seem like small changes have made a huge impact on the experience at The Freight—and have saved the venue money, allowing for this non-profit to invest in more community outreach and education.
As we close out Plastic Free July, we welcome all venues, restaurants, and other food service establishments to follow The Freight’s lead: connect with your local Clean Water Fund office and ask us how you, too, can make the switch to sustainable foodware.
